Dismantle, clean and mount a Lafranconi muffler

To thoroughly clean and polish the Lafranconi mufflers on my Breva 750ie, it is best to dismantle them. In this article I wrote down how to dismount and mount the muffler on the left side.

Tools needed

  • Hex key to remove heat shield
  • Socket wrench to remove muffler support near foot peg
  • Wrench with box-ring to loosen exhaust clamp

Muffler parts

Parts list was found on the Stein-Dinse spare part online shop

Breva750_left_muffler_partlist

  • 4. Exhaust clamp
  • 10. Muffler
  • 14. Muffler holder Left side (connected behind rear foot peg)
  • 19. nut (3 nuts in total, 2 to hold muffler, 1 to connect behind rear foot peg)
  • 26. heat shield
  • 27. hex socket screw M6 10 (M6 = Metric 6)
  • 28. washer 6,4X13x1,5
  • What is not in this picture: between the shield and the muffler I found 3 larger washers stuck to the muffler with exhaust paste.

Walkthrough

  1. Remove the heat shield, by unscrewing the 3 hex socket nuts
  2. Loosen the 2 nuts on the muffle holder, this is only to make it easer to unscrew them after the muffler has been removed completely.

  3. Loosen the exhaust clamp so that it slides over the exhaust side, away from the muffler.Jan 039
  4. Loosen and unscrew bolt from the hex socket nut behind the foot peg.Jan 040
  5. The parts after removal and before cleaning.

  6. New holes had been drilled in the muffler holder. Since it was a 2nd hand motorbike, I have no idea if this was done by the previous owner.

  7. The bits and pieces after cleaning. The muffler and muffler holder are cleaned with cotton cloth and chrome polish. I rinsed the rusty bolts with WD-40.

  8. After mounting the muffler without tightening the screws, make sure that the exhaust clamp nut is not too horizontally tightened otherwise the end of the nut will prevent the side stand from moving in. Below picture was taken with the camera in horizontal position. The nut head on the left must be higher than the tip.

One of my 1st trips: to the menhir of Brunehaut

Brunehaut is a small community near the French border in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. At the crossroads of an old roman road from Tournai to Cambrai, there is a menhir in the middle of the fields.
